Opening RAM Files
The RAM file type is primarily associated with RealPlayer.
What is a RAM file
How to open RAM files
You need a suitable software like RealPlayer to open a RAM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RAM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RAM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert RAM files:
- RealPlayer
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RAM files are often referred to as RealPlayer simple text files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- RealMedia (Metafile) by RealNetworks, Inc.Reference one or more remote RealAudio or RealMedia streams. Use this file type for RM Media redirection. Use a text editor to create a .RAM file that contains a single line: the full URL to the .RM file (e.g., MYAUDIO.RAM contains http://mysite.com/myaudio.rm as its only entry). Use ASCII mode to upload the .RAM file and binary mode to upload the .RM file. Be certain the server has audio/x-realaudio as the MIME type for the .RM file extension and audio/x-pn-realaudio for the .RAM file extension. You can then link to the .RAM file with the following HTML code: <a href="myaudio.ram" type="audio/x-pn-realaudio">Play My Audio</a> The Mime types used with this association are: audio/x-pn-realaudio, audio/vnd.rn-realaudio, audio/x-pm-realaudio-plugin, audio/x-pn-realvideo, audio/x-realaudio, video/x-pn-realvideo, text/plain. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 72 74 73 70 3A 2F 2F, ASCII: rtsp://. Program ID is ramfile, RealMedia File, RealPlayer.RAM.6, UltraPlayer.AudioFile, Winamp.File Related links: FILExt CODEC and Video Player FAQ
RAM file format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the RAM files:
The RAM extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in RAM files:
- 30% of all RAM files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "http" at the beginning. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The file size is in the range of 43 bytes to 300 bytes. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. The keywords http are typical for these files. These files are often associated with trad.
- 30% of all RAM files belong to RealMedia meta. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. A typical file size is 140 bytes. The files contain the following words: rtsp, BBC-UID, SSO2-UID and rmv8. Such files sometimes refer to music, audio and belfast.
All the rest of the RAM files (40%) have different formats, often, for example, pnm and RMF. They are often associated with snapshot, video, tlyhan, mona, listening or story. If you want to find out what your RAM file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a ram metadata file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with RAM files
- Associate the RAM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open metadata files. Because only the current version supports the latest RAM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available RealPlayer update.
- To make sure that your RAM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .RAM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
