SMIL file format:
To find out what program is needed to open SMIL files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the SMIL files comes to the following conclusion:
The SMIL extension is quite commonly used. The file itself predominantly uses a uniform format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 85% of all SMIL files belong to Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language. The files are using the common file format XML. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 3 KB in size and range from 700 bytes to 330 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <!DOCTYPE smil, DOCTYPE smil PUBLIC, <head>, <?xml version="1.0", <smil>, PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD, DTD SMIL 1, SMIL 1.0//EN", content, meta name, http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-smil/SMIL10.dtd, <?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?>, smil xmlns and daisy. Examples of file names are 001.smil or PTK20180601.SMIL. Such files are related to index, master and page.
- 8% of all SMIL files internally utilize the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. SMIL files can be up to 1 KB in size, but are often around 590 bytes - 1 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, <head>, <smil> and <meta src="https://sidestream-content. Such files sometimes refer to afoldedwish.
The remaining 7% of all SMIL files are different files with different signatures, such as Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language and HTML. Sometimes used for counter, pres, wish, afoldedwish, folded, shine or dead. You can get all the details of your SMIL file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .smil file to view" above.
