What is an AAF file

AAF files mostly belong to Premiere Pro by Adobe. AAF (Advanced Authoring Format) is a file format used for data interchange across video authoring programs. An AAF is typically used to store/share video or multimedia content that is still in the editing process. AAF files typically contain essence (multimedia) and metadata consisting of embedded and referenced media content and information about editing decisions. The multimedia data in AAF files are called "Essence data" and they consist of audio (music), video, graphics, text, animation, and other media types, while the metadata provides additional information about essence data or information used to modify or combine individual sections of essence data, or that provides supplementary information about essence data. Video-authoring programs such as Pro Tools, Composer, Premiere Pro, and After Effects can be used to open, edit, and export AAF files.

How to open an AAF file

You need a suitable software like Premiere Pro to open an AAF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
