The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. An ACH file mainly uses a defined ACH format. The two most common formats are as follows:

80% of all ACH files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "101" at the beginning. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are often between 940 bytes and 11 KB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. BANK. These files are attributed to nacha, profile, bank, payroll, report, bbok, payment, bnsach, credit, kemlon, money, myach and dach.
2% of all ACH files use ZIP compression, i.e. an ACH file contains several compressed files. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The files are on average 4 MB in size and range from 4 KB to 62 MB.
