Opening an ACH File
The ACH file type is primarily associated with NetTellerApps.
What is an ACH file?
This file holds data for batch payments that are sent to banks for automated processing. It is a structured format used by systems like NetTellerApps to group multiple payment instructions into a single file. In this form, the details are arranged in fixed fields, which follow specific industry standards.
Key details provided by FilExt.com:
- Contains multiple transaction instructions in one file
- Used in the ACH network for electronic payments
- Designed to be read by dedicated banking software and not for casual editing
- Often follows a strict, fixed-width format for consistency
FilExt.com note: To open or view an ACH file, use the banking software provided by your financial institution or a text editor that supports fixed-width formatting. This helps ensure you see the content as it was intended, without misinterpreting the spacing or structure.
How to open an ACH file
You need a suitable software like NetTellerApps to open an ACH file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ACH file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ACH file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ACH file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the ACH files looks like this:
An ACH file mainly uses a defined ACH format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 80% of all ACH files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "101" at the beginning. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are often between 940 bytes and 11 KB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. BANK. These files are attributed to nacha, profile, bank, payroll, report, bbok, payment, bnsach, credit, kemlon, money, myach and dach.
- 2% of all ACH files use ZIP compression, i.e. an ACH file contains several compressed files. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The files are on average 4 MB in size and range from 4 KB to 62 MB.
The remaining 18% of all ACH files are files with no common format. Tagged as local. If you want to find out what your ACH file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with ACH files
- Associate the ACH file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open transaction files. Because only the current version supports the latest ACH file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available NetTellerApps update.
- To make sure that your ACH file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
