What is an ACS file?

ACS files mostly belong to ActionDirector by CyberLink. An ACS file is a script which controls interactive environments in id Tech 1 engine-based games such as Hexen and Doom. It contains code written in Action Code Script scripting language and compiled using ACC compiler. Another type of ACS file is a video editing project created with ActionDirector video editing software. This file doesn't contain actual video clips. Instead, it contains XML-encoded data about project configuration, changes, and references to media sources (video/audio clips).

How to open an ACS file

You need a suitable software like ActionDirector to open an ACS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. Most of these files are 24 KB to 100 KB in size. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, DateTime, DeviceUsed, Duration, Notes, SerialNumber, Session and WaffleMAC. The file name SN20180601.ACS is typical for these files.
