What is an ADP file?

ADP files mostly belong to Access by Microsoft. An ADP file is a data project created with the 2010 and earlier versions of Access database management system. Instead of linking database tables and views, an ADP file provides a direct connection to an SQL Server database; allowing design and data updates. Unlike an Access database (ACCDB), a project (ADP) file does not contain data definition-based objects, tables, nor queries. ADP format has been replaced with ACCDP in Access 2013. Another type of ADP file contains die-cut post data used by Alphacam computer-aided design/manufacturing program.

How to open ADP files

You need a suitable software like Access to open an ADP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ADP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ADP file directly in the browser:. The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. The ADP file extension is not found very often and has no uniform or dominant file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 15% of all ADP files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known by the name OLE2 Compound Document Format or Composite Document File Format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. The file contains sections Cmdbars, DocumentSummaryInformation, Forms, Modules, SummaryInformation, VBA, CustomGroups, DataAccessPages, Databases, PropData, Reports and Scripts. The file size is in the range of 16 KB to 14 MB. The file type was used 20 years ago but is still in use today.
• 8% of all ADP files have the same signature APCM. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 140 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. APCM. A common filename is boot.adp or confirm.adp. Files like these are sometimes connected to cursor.
