What is an ADP file?

ADP files mostly belong to Access by Microsoft. An ADP file is a data project created with the 2010 and earlier versions of Access database management system. Instead of linking database tables and views, an ADP file provides a direct connection to an SQL Server database; allowing design and data updates. Unlike an Access database (ACCDB), a project (ADP) file does not contain data definition-based objects, tables, nor queries. ADP format has been replaced with ACCDP in Access 2013. Another type of ADP file contains die-cut post data used by Alphacam computer-aided design/manufacturing program.

How to open ADP files

You need a suitable software like Access to open an ADP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ADP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ADP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ADP file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the ADP files:

The ADP file extension is not found very often and has no uniform or dominant file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

The remaining 77% of all ADP files are different files with different signatures, frequently e.g. RIFF, ZIP and DERF. They are often associated with diagnose, music, score or demo. If you want to find out what your ADP file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with ADP files

  • Associate the ADP file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open projects. Because only the current version supports the latest ADP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Access update.
  • To make sure that your ADP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .ADP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
