What is an AFF file?

AFF files mostly belong to MySpell. AFF files can refer to Advanced Forensic Format files that are used for storing forensic data. This file format has been developed by Simon Garfinkel and Basic Technology.

  • Main Use: Securely saving forensic data is important as it counts towards digital evidence and needs to be stored safely. AFF file format is an open file format and hence features a detailed published specification and a freely available source code. The file format is also extensible allowing for the storage of any kind of forensic data such as disk images and exported files. Using LZMA compression, it is possible to divide the data into smaller disk images to facilitate transport. AFF Tools is an assortment of tools built using the AFFLib library. These tools can run on FreeBSD, Linux, OS X operating systems.
  • Other Uses: AFF files are also used as spellcheck dictionary files by the two free office suite software i.e Kingsoft WPS Office and Apache OpenOffice. These AFF files are used for storing the description pertaining to the DIC spell check dictionary file. Both are AFF and DIC files are generally extracted from a ZIP dictionary package for a particular language and later installed in WPS Office or Openoffice.

How do you open AFF files?

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the AFF files looks like this:
