The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. These files are not pure binary files and are therefore readable and interpretable with a text editor. AMW files can be up to 88 KB in size, but are often around 4 KB - 34 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as pp_typeface, ps_typeface, ts_typeface, vp_typeface and vs_typeface.
