What is an ANIM file?

ANIM files mostly belong to Unity by Unity. ANIM is a video file format for storing movies and animation. The format was originally developed by Sparta for storing animated video sequences on the now discontinued Amiga operating systems but several video/animation authoring software also use ANIM as of today. ANIM file format is mainly associated with 2D and 3D animation clips created with Animation View, which is part of Unity, a cross-platform game development platform. ANIM files created with Animation View consist of 3D game objects, scripted animations, curves, and events. Maya, a powerful 3D modeling and animation software, uses a text-based ANIM file format to edit, store, and export animation curves, properties, objects, and references such as timelines, keyframes, rotations etc. Video games such as Homeworld and Antibody also save animation properties in ANIM files. Drawing and animation software used in discontinued Amiga operating systems were known to store animations in ANIM format.

How do you open ANIM files?

You need a suitable software like Unity to open an ANIM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ANIM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ANIM file directly in the browser:. ANIM file format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. • 35% of all ANIM files are Unity Animation files. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The average file size is 12 KB with most files being between 1 KB and 660 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords %TAG !u! tag:unity3d.com,2011, %YAML 1.1, --- !u!74 &7400000, AnimationClip, m_CorrespondingSourceObject: {fileID: 0}, m_Name, m_PrefabInstance: {fileID: 0}, m_ObjectHideFlags: 0 and m_PrefabAsset: {fileID: 0} are typical for these files. These files are often associated with animation, attack, idle, player, crouch, battle, block, walk and 3D model.
• 9% of all ANIM files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "@@b@!" at the beginning. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 6 KB to 150 KB. The keywords [info, fpsf, pdxasseti and [[root are typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to body, female, tank, portrait, infantry, happy and male.
