What is an ANN file?
ANN files mostly belong to Windows Help by Microsoft. ANN file format is mainly used by the Lingvo Dictionary software. It has other uses too.
- Main Use: ANN files can only describe dictionaries in the Lingvo-format that has been developed by an international software company called ABBYY. Lingvo Dictionary software contains word-definitions and is used for translating words into different languages. ANN files consist of metadata for DSL dictionaries as well as additional information such as dictionary subject, author, and creation date. These files are optional. However, when they are present, they take the name of the linked DSL file and should be placed in the location of the DSL file itself.
- Other Use: ANN files are also associated with the brat rapid annotation tool that provides a web-interface for collaborative text annotation. This tool is sometimes referred to simply as brat. Annotations created using brat are stored separately from the annotated information in the standoff format ANI. Thus, each document in the system has an annotated ANN file attached to it. These annotated ANN files belong to several categories such as general, text-bound, entity, event, relation, attribute, modification, normalization and note-based annotations.
How to open ANN files
You need a suitable software like Windows Help to open an ANN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. These files are often associated with menu, bajka and kret.
All the rest of the ANN files (60%) have different formats, the following 11 formats can be found: PDF, UTF-16 (LE), TIFF, XML, Begin and ALX.
