Opening an APB File
The APB file type is primarily associated with 7-Zip.
What is an APB file
An APB file is not a single standard file type but a file extension used by different software for very specific purposes. Its internal structure and intended use change depending on which application created it. Below are some common uses:
- FactoryTalk View Studio project archive: This type uses the 7z compression format (7z) to bundle project data. Such files are managed with tools like 7-Zip.
- Planogram layout file: Here, the file is structured as a Microsoft Compound document to hold layout designs, as seen with 3DVIA Composer. Specialized design software is needed to handle these files (3DS).
- Avery DesignPro/Hama label file: This format is used in label creation and printing. It appears in applications like Avery DesignPro and Hama APB LabelPrint (Avery).
- Game archive file: Known in some circles as an All Points Bulletin game file, this version often uses data formats linked to the Unreal engine. It is used to store game assets and can be modified with game modding tools (GTA Mods).
- AppImage package file: In some cases, the APB file is a package for bundling an application (often including ARM Peripheral Drivers) and is used with AppBuilder environments (IAR).
FilExt.com tips: The functionality of an APB file depends on its source. To open and view its contents, you must use the corresponding application that created it. Identifying the file’s origin (for example, whether it is an archive from FactoryTalk or a layout file from 3DVIA Composer) is essential.
How do you open APB files?
You need a suitable software like 7-Zip to open an APB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your APB file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a APB file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert APB files:
- 7-Zip
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. APB files are often referred to as 7-Zip compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Alphacam (Punch VB Macro) by PlanitAlphacam is a leading CAD/CAM software solution for the Woodworking industry. The core product of the company is Alphacam and is used in the manufacture of many types of components, from simple routed parts to complex, 5-axis furniture components. This file format is classified as CAD/CAM.
- Apollo Suite (Planogram) by Information Resources, Inc.Apollo Suite allows retailers and suppliers to produce planograms to improve the retail space planning process. Planograms achieve optimal inventory and space to sales objectives. Planograms produced using the Apollo Suite software can also be saved using XML or XMZ (compressed XML) file formats.

APB file extension format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the APB files looks like this:
The APB file extension is not common and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 30% of all APB files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. Header signature for the CFB format with 8-byte Hex value D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). The file contains sections that are named something like CompObj, SECTION and SummaryInformation. The files are 59 KB to 280 KB in size, with a median of 150 KB. The file type is a fairly new file format. Such APB files store data about dinners, gondola, shelves, juice and tier.
- 20% of all APB files are based on the well-known 7z file format. 7z is a compressed archive file format that supports several different data compression, encryption and pre-processing algorithms. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 1 MB to 18 MB in size, with a median of 3 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as tr3JR. Such files are related to scada.
All other APB files (50%) have different formats, frequently e.g. HAMA. These files are often connected to card, business or line. If you want to find out which format your APB file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .apb file to analyze".

an apb archive is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with APB files
- Associate the APB file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open archives. Because only the current version supports the latest APB file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available 7-Zip update.
- To make sure that your APB file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
