What is an ARX file?

ARX files mostly belong to AutoCAD. ARX files serve different purposes depending on their origin. The most common use is as an AutoCAD Runtime Extension. How can I open an ARX file?

You need a suitable software like AutoCAD to open an ARX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To find out what program is needed to open ARX files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. The ARX extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in ARX files:

• 45% of all ARX files use the popular EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware).
