Opening an ATF File
The ATF file type is primarily associated with Photoshop.
What is an ATF file?
- Main Use: When digital images are printed, certain pixels might look darker (refer to as dot gain) or lighter (called dot loss) as compared to the original. Adobe's ATF file contains data that can make up for this dot gain/loss seen in printed images by appropriately adjusting the dot percentage. This ensures that the printed copy is similar to the original digital version of the image. Apart from using these files as Adobe Transfer Function files, Adobe also uses ATF files as Adobe Texture Format files in game engines compatible with Stage3D such as Starling.
- Other Uses: Apart from Adobe, the GenePix microarray analysis software also uses ATF files as an Axon Text file. These ATF files are in plain text and tab-delimited form. They consist of multi-field records. In Windows, popular text editors such as Notepad++ and spreadsheet applications such as MS Excel can also open ATF files. AlternativaPlatform software also uses ATF files as Alternativa Texture files for storing 3D model texture which can be laid onto the original 3D model.
How to open an ATF file
You need a suitable software like Photoshop to open an ATF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ATF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ATF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ATF file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the ATF files looks like this:
The file type with the extension 'ATF' includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 60% of all ATF files are associated with Axon Text File format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. ATF files can be up to 16 MB in size, but are often around 16 KB - 3 MB. The file type is old but is used even today. The following filename is common: card.atf. Such ATF files store data about background, worldbg, page, diffuse, export, atlas, elite, table and spec.
- 4% of all ATF files have the same signature FF 0C 00 FF 01 00. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. ATF files can be up to 26 KB in size, but are often around 140 bytes - 18 KB.
The remaining 36% of all ATF files are files with no common format, the following 4 formats exist: zlib and PDF. They are often associated with unblocked, cdliatf, normal, string, aegis, dapur, sheen, virus or glow. You can get all the details of your ATF file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .atf file to analyze" above.

an atf transfer function settings file is a special file format by Adobe Systems Incorporated and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ATF files
- Associate the ATF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open transfer function settings files. Because only the current version supports the latest ATF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe Systems Incorporated manufacturer website after an available Photoshop update.
- To make sure that your ATF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ATF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
