What is an AXD file?
How to open an AXD file
You need a suitable software like ASP.NET to open an AXD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your AXD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a AXD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

AXD file format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below is our analysis of the AXD files:
The AXD file extension is quite common and includes different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in AXD files are:
- 20% of all AXD files store the data in the PDF file format. PDF is short for Portable Document Format, is a file format to present documents, including text formatting and images, in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 54 KB to 810 KB. The file type is very recent. Files like these have the following tags: report, viewer, acsresource, service, reserved, control, telerik and showpdf.
- 15% of all AXD files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). There is also a globally unique identifier c0176a23-dc10-11d0-bb09-00a0244ea6a2. The data in this file is stored in streams whose names are Class Data, Contents, DocumentSummaryInformation, Object Data, SummaryInformation and apc. Most of these files are 43 KB to 1 MB in size. These files can be linked to document and system.
All other AXD files (65%) have no uniform format, the following 10 formats can be found: Source, JFIF, ZIP, GIF, PNG, Deployment and Axum. These files are often connected to resource, script, handler, dynamic, prod or image. If you want to find out which format your AXD file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .axd file to analyze".

How to solve problems with AXD files
- Associate the AXD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open web resource handlers. Because only the current version supports the latest AXD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available ASP.NET update.
- To make sure that your AXD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
