Opening a CDM File
The CDM file type is primarily associated with PowerDesigner.
What is a CDM file?
They are often Conceptual Data Model files created with tools like PowerDesigner, which use an XML structure to represent system and data designs.
In other cases, a CDM file may be a compressed file (ZIP) that contains a JSON configuration, as seen with Cadmos.
Some CDM files use the plist format to define a Core Data Model in projects developed in Xcode.
Moreover, certain CDM files serve as layout files in NTI CD-Maker projects, aligning with CD compilation tasks such as those handled in Nero Burning ROM.
Details and use cases:
How to open a CDM file
You need a suitable software like PowerDesigner to open a CDM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CDM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CDM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CDM file format:
To find out what program is needed to open CDM files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the CDM files is as follows:
The CDM file extension is not common and is used by different programs with different formats. The file formats most commonly found in CDM files are:
- 55% of all CDM files are associated with PowerDesigner Conceptual Model files, which internally utilize the well-known XML format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. Most of these files are 56 KB to 350 KB in size. The file type is relatively new. The keywords <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <?PowerDesigner AppLocale="UTF16", Label, Name, LastModificationDate and Objects are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are cdm.cdm. These files are often associated with data, conceptual, database and model.
- 7% of all CDM files belong to NTI CD Maker image. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view the contents and find segments of text. The files are 4 KB to 140 KB in size, with a median of 29 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: CDLAYOUTV.
The remaining 38% of all CDM files are files with no common format. If you want to find out what your CDM file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a cdm data model file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CDM files
- Associate the CDM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data model files. Because only the current version supports the latest CDM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available PowerDesigner update.
- To make sure that your CDM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CDM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
