What is a DMX file?

DMX files mostly belong to Source Filmmaker by Steam. DMX is the filename extension of videos (cutscenes and short movies) created/recorded using Source Filmmaker, a movie-making program for Source (a game development platform). DMX files typically contain gameplay video recordings which consist of 3D models, effects, model data, and map objects that are used in a game. The file is stored in DMX (Data Model eXchange) format as a "datamodel" object using ASCII or binary encoding. While ASCII-based DMX format is suitable for creating smaller DMX files that are editable, binary-encoded DMX files are better suited for larger DMX files.
