What is a DSC file?

DSC files mostly belong to dpkg-source by The Debian Project. A DSC file contains source control information generated for a Debian package when the dpkg-utility builds a source archive. It contains an RFC 2822 header which describes source code and assets compressed into a DEB file. DSC is also the filename extension of a text file containing the description of a driver to be processed by the DrvInst program/process on Windows. Various programs use a DSC file to save a text-encoded description (like the "readme") of a project/program. Another type of DSC file is a discarded record created when Oracle Database encounters a record that fails the LOAD clause.

How to open a DSC file

You need a suitable software like dpkg-source to open a DSC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The DSC file extension is not found very often and covers a large number of different file formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

7% of all DSC files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA" at the beginning. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 3 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: ----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----, Binary, Source, Format: 3.0 (quilt), Architecture, Maintainer, Version and Hash: SHA256.
5% of all DSC files use the same file format, which have the signature hoven. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 16 MB to 49 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. hoven.
