What is a DTL file?

DTL files mostly belong to Creo by PTC. A DTL file contains drawing details (also called "drawing setup") created by Creo computer-aided industrial design and manufacturing software. It contains settings which define the behavior of a drawing. Information saved in a DTL file can include the dimensions, orientation, geometric tolerance standard, layout, and font formatting of a drawing. Another type of DTL file contains the settings of Dolphin programs such as SuperNova and Easy Reader. Pinnacle Studio video editor uses a DTL file to save data. Older versions of MicroStation used a DTL file to save detail sheets.

How to open a DTL file

You need a suitable software like Creo to open a DTL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DTL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DTL file directly in the browser:. DTL file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the DTL files looks like this:

The DTL file extension is very common and covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 60% of all DTL files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "_dtl" at the beginning. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are often between 260 bytes and 140 KB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. _dtl and name. An example of a file name is 20180601.dtl.
• 15% of all DTL files use the same file format, which have the signature 46 20. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 10 KB. The keywords DTL are typical for these files. These files can be linked to kpte, cpte, epte, npte, rpte, dpte and wpte.

The remaining 25% of all DTL files are different files with different signatures, the following 8 formats exist: Drum Traker module, UTF-8, .NET and dtl.
