All about IAM Files
The IAM file type is primarily associated with Inventor.
What is an IAM file?
How to open IAM files
You need a suitable software like Inventor to open an IAM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IAM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IAM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert IAM files:
- Inventor by Autodesk
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. IAM files are often referred to as Inventor cads because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Fusion 360 (assembly model) by AutodeskFusion 360 is a computer-aided design, manufacturing, and engineering software. It can be used to open, edit, and fabricate an assembly (AIM) model created with Inventor. This file format is classified as CAD.
IAM file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the IAM files comes to the following conclusion:
The IAM file ending predominantly uses a uniform format. The following file formats are most commonly found in IAM files:
- 98% of all IAM files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). The CLSID (class identifier of a Windows component object) is e60f81e1-49b3-11d0-93c3-7e0706000000. The file contains several sections which are named like Qz4dgm1gRjudbpksAayal4qdGf, RSeStorage, UFRxDoc, Aaalpg0m0wzvuhc41dwauxbwJc, PypkizqiUjudbposAayal4qdGf, Qm0qv30hP3udrkgvAaitm1o20d, Ynltsm4aEtpcuzs1Lwgf30tmXf, Zrxrt4arFafyu34gYa3l3ohgHg, CacheGraphics and Protein. IAM files can be up to 48 MB in size, but are often around 87 KB - 2 MB. The file type is old but is used even today. Such files sometimes refer to assembly, wheel, ensamblaje, assieme, layout, block and table.
All other IAM files (2%) have no uniform format. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your IAM file!
Technical Data for IAM File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

an iam assembly model is a special file format by Autodesk and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with IAM files
- Associate the IAM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open assembly models. Because only the current version supports the latest IAM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Autodesk manufacturer website after an available Inventor update.
- To make sure that your IAM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .IAM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
