What is an IDA file

IDA files mostly belong to IDA Pro. The IDA file extension is used by several specialized applications and does not refer to a single file type.
For example, in IDA Pro—a tool for reverse engineering and binary analysis—an IDA file can be a disassembler database or project file. These files store the disassembled code, function data, and analysis results. They may even be wrapped in formats like ELF or ZIP for packaging complex project data.
Other applications use the same extension differently. Consider these cases:
  • IDAutomation Label Design Files: These are XML-based label templates created with IDAutomation Label Design Studio. They define print layouts and can be edited as text. More details can be found at IDAutomation.
  • Interbanking Files: Some IDA files serve as Argentine bank payment files. Although they contain binary data, they are sometimes described as aligned with IDA Pro’s file structures. Visit Interbanking for additional info.
  • IQAN Application Files: These are produced by IQANdesign and are similar to IDA Pro disassembler database files. More details are available at IQANdesign.
  • IDA Pro Project Files: In addition to the database files, some IDA files are project files in a compressed (ZIP) format used to bundle analysis data. Learn more at Hex-Rays IDA Pro.
  • FilExt.com tips: If you encounter an IDA file, first check its internal format. If it begins with XML tags, it is likely a label design template; if it appears as binary data or a ZIP archive, it is probably associated with a disassembler project. Using the correct application is key to opening and viewing the file correctly.

    How to open IDA files

You need a suitable software like IDA Pro to open an IDA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IDA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IDA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
