What is an IGR file

IGR files mostly belong to Intergraph SmartSketch. These IGR files are used for storing CAD drawing data in an Intergraph format. Most of these files use the Microsoft Compound structure to combine multiple embedded streams that represent layers, annotations, and design elements.

Primary use: Created by Intergraph SmartSketch to hold detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings.

Alternative use: Some files are ZIP-compressed to store 2D/3D CAD data, as seen in files from Innovyze InfoWater Graphics.

How to open an IGR file

You need a suitable software like Intergraph SmartSketch to open an IGR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IGR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IGR file directly in the browser:. Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the IGR files:

The IGR file type is mainly used by one program with a specific format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 90% of all IGR files use the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). IGR files contain an app name SmartSketch Application or Imagineer Application. The unique Windows component object identifier is 7effbe60-44f5-11ce-83c5-08003601a74e. The data in this file is stored in streams whose names are PSMroots, DocVersion2, JSitesList, AppObject, PSMcluster0, PSMspacemap, PSMclustertable, PSMsegmenttable, StyleCluster, DocumentSummaryInformation, SummaryInformation, Dynamic Attributes Metadata, Unclustered Dynamic Attributes, Sheet6, Sheet12, Sheet22 and Sheet32. IGR files can be up to 110 MB in size, but are often around 49 KB - 1 MB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Such files sometimes refer to trenchtech, nobates, layout, sketch, hajduszoboszlo, document, original and diagram.
• 4% of all IGR files are based on the zip format, i.e. an IGR file contains several compressed files. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The file size is in the range of 21 KB to 320 KB. The files contain the following words: NUCX.
