What is an IML file

IML files mostly belong to IntelliJ IDEA by Jet Brains. An IML file is a module for a Java application created by IntelliJ IDEA integrated development environment. An IML module is usually stored in the root folder of a project. It contains module configuration for resource files and source code. Content roots (sub folders) in a Java project created with IntelliJ IDEA also contain IML modules. Another type of IML file is an email (message) sent or received using Act! customer relationship management software.

How do you open IML files?

You need a suitable software like IntelliJ IDEA to open an IML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. • 3% of all IML files start with the bytes Re, which are crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. Most of these files are 2 KB to 41 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Received: from, Return-Path, with, Delivered-To and mail. The file name msg.iml is typical for these files.
