What is an IND file?

IND files mostly belong to MapInfo. Overview: IND files are index files that store data pointers for fast access. They are used in different software environments to manage internal referencing systems.
MapInfo TAB Index File:
  • Used by MapInfo Professional, these files tie a map’s TAB data to its underlying records.
  • This geospatial index speeds up access to mapping data.
  • For more details, visit the MapInfo Professional webpage.
  • InDesign Index File:
  • Created within Adobe InDesign, these files help manage the layout and structure of documents by indexing content.
  • They are a part of the internal system and are not meant for manual editing.
  • Note: Each usage relies on its parent application to interpret the data properly.

    How to open IND files

You need a suitable software like MapInfo to open an IND file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IND file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IND file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
