What is an IO file?

IO files mostly belong to LeoCAD. IO files serve several functions depending on the software that creates them. The most common use is for storing LEGO CAD models in a compressed ZIP format. This file holds model data, parts lists, and design instructions, and is typically managed with tools like LeoCAD or Studio 2.0.
Other uses include:

Diagram Files: Created by diagrams.net (draw.io), these files contain structured diagram data.

Web Page Archives: Some IO files save web pages in the MHTML format (for example, a resume page saved by Blink), preserving web elements for offline viewing.

How do you open IO files?

You need a suitable software like LeoCAD to open an IO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IO file directly in the browser:. If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. The IO file extension is very common and mainly uses a special format. The following file formats are most commonly found in IO files:

• 85% of all IO files use the ZIP format, i.e. an IO file contains several compressed files. IO files contain from 6 to 18 compressed files. Common included file names are .info, errorPartList.err, model.ldr, model1.ldr, modelv1.ldr and thumbnail.png. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. A typical file size is 370 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: model.ldr. Files like these are about hogwarts, lego, robot, castle, original, mini, build, design, stand and tower.
• 4% of all IO files use the same file format, which have the signature <mxfile . These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. IO files can be up to 2 MB in size, but are often around 2 KB - 91 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. like Gecko, agent, (KHTML, like, x64) AppleWebKit/537.36, Windows NT 10, 10.0; Win64;, draw, Mozilla, Safari, modified, mxfile host, Chrome, etag, Electron and mxfile modified. Files like these are sometimes connected to draw, diagram, architecture, flow, network and team.
