What is an IPC file

IPC files mostly belong to Proteus. IPC files serve several specialized roles rather than a single function.
Most commonly, they are used as a PCB design interchange format created by tools like Proteus. In this case the file holds board layout data to share designs between different electronic design applications.
Other forms include:

A PCB testpoint report produced by Cape CAD Design, which documents test points on a board.

A PCB test data file generated by EAGLE; more details can be found at EAGLE overview.

A netlist from CAMCAD Professional used for circuit connection information.

A ZIP container that holds HTML content, as seen in files from Intercom – viewable after extraction (Intercom).

Opening and viewing an IPC file depends on its internal format. For a board design file, use the dedicated EDA software (Proteus, EAGLE, or CAMCAD Professional). If the file appears to be a compressed archive or image, use ZIP tools or an image viewer accordingly.

How can I open an IPC file?

You need a suitable software like Proteus to open an IPC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. The IPC file extension is quite common and covers different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in IPC files:

40% of all IPC files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "P JOB " at the beginning. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. A typical file size is 110 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. P CODE 00, brd and P UNITS CUST 0. Files like these have the following tags: netlist, cadcam, board, launchxl, sensor, cadcamnetlist, gerber, eval and reva.
15% of all IPC files use the same file format, which have the signature C P. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. IPC files can be up to 1 MB in size, but are often around 18 KB - 360 KB. The keywords C Date, C --------------- Layer Stackup -------------------, C Board Name , C Project Name , C Time and C Top Layer are typical for these files. These files are often associated with testpoint, fabrication, report and assembly.

All other IPC files (45%) have no consistent format, the following 6 formats exist: ZIP and ARROW. These files are often connected to configuration, players, ipac, player or index.
