What is an IPJ file?

IPJ files mostly belong to Inventor by Autodesk. An IPJ file is a project created with Inventor computer-aided mechanical design and engineering software. The contents of an IPJ file are written in Extensible Markup Language (XML) and they reference the locations of components (assembles, fittings, parts, fasteners, and libraries) used in a design project. Another type of IPJ file is a project created with Enact statistical process control software for manufacturing operations.

How to open an IPJ file

You need a suitable software like Inventor to open an IPJ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IPJ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IPJ file directly in the browser:. The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the IPJ files looks like this:

The IPJ file extension is not found very often and covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 55% of all IPJ files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). Sections and streams in the file have names like IIncaProjectInfo and Samples. The file size is in the range of 170 KB to 15 MB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Examples of file names are Project 1.ipj.
• 40% of all IPJ files are Autodesk Inventor Project files, which are based on the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 7 KB to 11 KB in size, with a median of 10 KB. The keywords <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16" standalone="no" ?> and <InventorProject contentcenterguid="aaaaaa are typical for these files. Such IPJ files store data about assembly.
