All about IPK Files
The IPK file type is primarily associated with dpkg.
What is an IPK file
- Uses: IPK files are utilized to deploy software and other utilities over low-resource machines such as routers, multimedia receivers, set-top boxes, etc.
- File structure: IPK files are similar to a standard Debian package (DEB). Both are TAR archives which contain pre-install and post-install scripts apart from that main installation data. IPK files contain program specifications and deployment data that are linked to the operating system of the device.
- Features: IPK files contain indicators that map the directory locations of the program files necessary for the successful running of the software application. File configuration data and settings defined by the author of the package can also be added into the application after the software installation is finished.
The IPK extension is also used by the FileNet Forms Manager as a Form Package. This was a part of IBM's FileNet application, a form management solution. The IPK held electronic form data created with FileNet eForms Designer.
How to open an IPK file
You need a suitable software like dpkg to open an IPK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IPK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IPK file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

IPK format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the IPK files:
IPK is a very widely used file extension. The file type includes different formats for the applicable programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 45% of all IPK files are associated with Debian Linux Package files, which internally utilize the well-known LinuxAr format. This file format is an archive created by the Unix archiver "ar", which stores multiple files together in a single archive, that allows each one to be separately retrieved later. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. Most of these files are 11 KB to 9 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: !<arch>, debian-binary, control and 0 0 0 644 4. Such files sometimes refer to enigma, plugin, extensions, softcams, oscam, mips, images and cccam.
- 20% of all IPK files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "50 EC 12 BA 00" at the beginning. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. IPK files can be up to 5 GB in size, but are often around 7 MB - 2 GB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as itf_cooked, world, cache and maps. An example of a file name is bundle_PC.ipk or Bundle_0_WII.ipk. These files are often associated with bundle, wiiu, bundlelogic, android, scene and patch.
All other IPK files (35%) have no consistent format, such as Psion Organiser Pack image, Nintendo DS Packed Images, GZIP, ZIP and debian. The category is picons, loop, mipsel, aarch, dark, iplayer or bolt. If you want to find out which format your IPK file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .ipk file to view".
Technical Data for IPK File Extension
an ipk package file is a special file format by The Debian Project and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with IPK files
- Associate the IPK file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open package files. Because only the current version supports the latest IPK file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the The Debian Project manufacturer website after an available dpkg update.
- To make sure that your IPK file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .IPK file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
