Opening IQ Files
The IQ file type is primarily associated with SDRSharp.
What is an IQ file
How do you open IQ files?
You need a suitable software like SDRSharp to open an IQ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IQ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IQ file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

- IBM Query File
IQ file format:
To view or edit IQ files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below is our analysis of the IQ files:
IQ is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type does not have a uniform file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 8% of all IQ files start with the bytes 7F 7F 7F 7F crucial for this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 3 MB in size and range from 3.4 MB to 38 MB. The following filename is common: off.iq or some_wierd_stuff.iq. Files like these are sometimes connected to stuff, wierd and some.
- 7% of all IQ files start with the bytes C8 4D 14 3B 79 E4 07 BB A0 2A E1 3A 0D A4 D3 B9 crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. A typical file size is 90 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. 0;9=&<. An example of a file name is rf1.iq.
All the rest of the IQ files (85%) have different formats. Often described as rtlsdr, msps, iqrec, xmhz, hackrf or sample. If you want to find out which format your IQ file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .iq file to analyze".
