What is an ISL file

ISL files mostly belong to Inno Setup. ISL files serve a variety of specialized purposes depending on the software that creates them.
For the majority, these files act as installer configuration resources. In the case of Inno Setup, an ISL file may be an XML-based installer file or a language file that holds text strings and settings for the installation process. Link/Map Files: It can be a linking file (in-StepLink) tied to Micro Focus in-Step (in-Step info) or an island map file used within GIS software environments (e.g., related to Isadora, with info available at Troikatronix).

How to open an ISL file

• 20% of all ISL files start with the magic bytes [Nero-IslandInitialState][COMP], which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. A typical file size is 2 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: [Nero-IslandInitialState][COMP]. The file name MatancerosStarter.matanceros.isl or NublarStarter.nublar.isl is characteristic of these files. Such files are related to sandbox, muerta and challenge.
