ISS file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the ISS files comes to the following conclusion:
The file type with the extension 'ISS' includes various formats for various programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 40% of all ISS files are Inno Setup Script files, which are based on the config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. These files contain text and words, not binary data. Most of these files are 1 KB to 6 KB in size. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The following keywords are characteristic: SEE THE DOCUMENTATION FOR DETAILS ON CREATING INNO SETUP SCRIPT FILES, ; Script generated by the Inno Setup Script Wizard, #define MyAppName and #define MyAppVersion. The file name Installer.iss or mi-360-setup.iss is typical for these files. These files can be linked to setup, opentrack, script and inno.
- 15% of all ISS files are Inno Setup Script files, which are based on the UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. ISS files are between 3 KB and 66 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as NAME, define, Setup, SCRIPT, free, software and Inno. Examples of file names are patch.iss or installer.iss. Files like these are sometimes connected to subtitle and edit.
All other ISS files (45%) have no uniform format, the following 8 formats can be found: InstallShield Response File, Inno Setup Script, config, Source, Response and Sub. Sometimes used for install, oraclexe, pdfcreator, windows, scriptplayer or bravura. If you want to find out which format your ISS file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .iss file to view this image".
