Opening a KEP File
The KEP file type is primarily associated with Komodo Edit.
What is a KEP file?
For example, one version of a KEP file holds Komodo Edit Preferences, which stores settings for the Komodo Edit text editor (Komodo Edit).
Other KEP files are used in SAP training environments as Knowledge Pool files that include course material, and some are used in gaming – for instance, as a save file for King’s Bounty II.
The internal structure may differ among these uses. Some files use a Microsoft Compound File format, while others are compressed with GZIP. Additionally, there are KEP files linked with Kaspersky Endpoint Security to store settings or data.
FilExt.com note: When needing to view or modify a KEP file, it is important to use the appropriate software. Each application – whether it is Komodo Edit, SAP training tools, or a game client – will parse and present the data according to its own requirements.
How do you open KEP files?
You need a suitable software like Komodo Edit to open a KEP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your KEP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a KEP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert KEP files:
- Komodo Edit
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. KEP files are often referred to as Komodo Edit settings because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

KEP format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the KEP files looks like this:
The file type with the extension 'KEP' includes various formats for various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 40% of all KEP files are based on the well-known config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The files are often between 78 bytes and 80 bytes in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as [console], [controller], autoshowonerror=0, left and stayontop=0. The file name krenvprf.kep is typical for these files.
- 40% of all KEP files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This Windows file format has features similar to those of a filesystem format with virtual files and subfolders. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. KEP files are between 3 MB and 23 MB in size. A usual file name is BC411_v40b_en_1998_08.kep. Files like these are sometimes connected to tapp and tasd.
All other KEP files (20%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. GZIP. The category is flow or work. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your KEP file!
Technical Data for KEP File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a kep settings file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with KEP files
- Associate the KEP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open settings files. Because only the current version supports the latest KEP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Komodo Edit update.
- To make sure that your KEP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .KEP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
