All about MBR Files
The MBR file type is primarily associated with GRUB.
What is an MBR file?
There are two main uses for MBR files:
- Boot Sector Role: The file holds the boot code and disk partition information. It is essential for initializing the boot process. Bootloaders like GRUB and utilities such as fdisk or MBRWizard work with these records.
- Specialized Archives: Some MBR files, for example those used for Motion Bro transition effects in Adobe After Effects, are structured as compressed (ZIP) archives. They store motion graphic data used in video editing.
Other uses, such as a printer font file with disk partition table images, appear rarely.
Since these files often contain binary data, a regular text editor is not ideal for viewing them. Specialized tools like hex editors or disk imaging programs are recommended. For more technical background, see the Wikipedia entry on Master Boot Record.
FilExt.com tip: Keep in mind that any alteration to an MBR file can affect system booting, so always back up before making changes.
How to open an MBR file
You need a suitable software like GRUB to open an MBR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MBR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MBR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MBR files:
- GRUB
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MBR files are often referred to as GRUB systems because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- AS/400 (Physical File Member) by IBMRight-click on a file system, library, or folder, and select Filter to define which contents you wish to view. The first part of the filter is the name of the object, and the second part of a filter is the file extension such as .LIB for a library, .FILE for a file, and .MBR for a member. You can individually define a filter for each directory. As an example, the AS/400 stores source code in source files. These source files have source members. The source member for an AS/400 object is where the code/definition is. The AS/400 uses the EBCDIC character set. Related links: File System Browsing Information
MBR file format:
To find out what program is needed to open MBR files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the MBR files looks like this:
MBR is not a common file extension and includes many different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 20% of all MBR files use the same file format, which have the signature EB 63 90 00 00 00 00 00. They consist of unreadable binary data. The file size is in the range of 510 bytes to 600 bytes. The following keywords are characteristic: ZRr=. An example of a file name is image.mbr.
- 10% of all MBR files start with the bytes EB 5E, which are crucial for this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 8 KB with most files being between 8 KB and 9 KB in size. An example of a file name is NeoGrub.mbr or g2ldr.mbr. Files like these have the following tags: grub and grldr.
All other MBR files (70%) have different formats. They are often associated with linux. If you want to find out which format your MBR file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .mbr file to view".
Technical Data for MBR File Extension
an mbr binary boot record file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MBR files
- Associate the MBR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open binary boot record files. Because only the current version supports the latest MBR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available GRUB update.
- To make sure that your MBR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MBR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
