What is an N3 file?

N3 files mostly belong to Virtuoso. Your .n3 file uses the Notation3 format to encode RDF (Resource Description Framework) data. This file stores statements as triples (subject, predicate, object) in a plain text layout.
It is used mainly with semantic web tools for data integration and reasoning.

How to open N3 files

You need a suitable software like Virtuoso to open an N3 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your N3 file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a N3 file directly in the browser:. This is a langauge which is a compact and readable alternative to RDF's XML syntax, but also is extended to allow greater expressiveness. The Mime types used with this association are: text/plain. This file format is classified as Text.

To find out what program is needed to open N3 files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the N3 files produces the following result:

N3 is not a commonly used file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

50% of all N3 files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "@prefix " at the beginning. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. N3 files can be up to 37 GB in size, but are often around 490 bytes - 14 GB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The keywords @prefix rdf: <http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#> , @prefix rdfs: <http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#> , @prefix xsd: <http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#> , http://purl.org and @prefix nee: <http://www.ics.for are typical for these files. A usual file name is TweetsCOV19.n3 or kbpedia_reference_concepts.n3. These files are attributed to tweetsco, reference, concepts, kbpedia, month, inferrence, statements, extended and linkage.
25% of all N3 files have the same signature <http. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. N3 files can be up to 780 MB in size, but are often around 35 KB - 100 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <http://sabcorpus.linkeddata.es/vocab#hate> <http and <http://sabcorpus.linkeddata.es/vocab#hate> <http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#type> <http://www.gsi.dit.upm.es/ontologies/onyx/ns#Emotion> . The file name corpus.n3 is characteristic of these files.

How to solve problems with N3 files

Associate the N3 file extension with the correct application.
