Opening a NED File

The NED file type is primarily associated with OMNeT++.

NEDFile Extension NED
File extension: NED
File type:  text-based configuration file

What is a NED file

NED files mostly belong to OMNeT++. NED files are used in several specialized areas. The most common use is with OMNeT++ where the file acts as a network description file. It holds text that defines network modules, components, and connections required for simulation.
This file type is not limited to one purpose. Other uses include:
  • Database definitions: Some programs like Navicat Premium use these files to store database structures that can work with tools such as MySQL Workbench.
  • Experiment data: In other cases, a NED file may contain NanoDrop experiment data. These files are often encoded in UTF-16 (LE) and come from NanoDrop spectrophotometers. You can learn more on the Thermo Fisher website.
  • Network equipment descriptors: Another function is to provide descriptors for network equipment. Some tools, like those from NEDi, use these files in conjunction with network simulations, as detailed on the OMNeT++ website.
  • FilExt.com tips: You can open these files with any text editor to view the content. However, for full functionality, it is best to use the software that originally created the file. For OMNeT++ network descriptions, refer to the OMNeT++ manual for more details.

    How to open NED files

You need a suitable software like OMNeT++ to open a NED file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NED file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NED file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert NED files:

    1. OMNeT++
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. NED files are often referred to as OMNeT++ developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
    2. MSN Application Extension
    3. OMNeT++/OMNEST (Network Description File) by András Varga
OMNeT++ is a public-source, component-based, modular and open-architecture simulation environment with strong GUI support and an embeddable simulation kernel. Its primary application area is the simulation of communication networks and because of its generic and flexible architecture. OMNeT++ is a free open-source discrete event simulator mostly used for networks. OMNEST is its commercial version. This file format is classified as Source Code. a ned text-based configuration file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with NED files

    • Associate the NED file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open text-based configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest NED file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available OMNeT++ update.
    • To make sure that your NED file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
