Opening NEX Files
The NEX file type is primarily associated with Opera.
What is a NEX file?
- Binary data file: NEX file format is used as a binary data file by Plexon's NeuroExplorer software. This Windows-only compatible tool is used in the analysis of neurophysiological data. All the neurological data that is necessary for statistical analysis and modeling is stored in binary format as a NEX file. Since NeuroExplorer software is compatible only with Windows OS, it is not possible to access the binary data in NEX files from Linux or iOS machines.
- Compressed file: NEX files can also refer to Navigator Extension format files that are utilized in downloading browser add-ons. NEX files are custom to the Opera browser. They contain the data that is necessary for the installation of the Opera browser compatible add-ons like Lastpass and Adblocker. Prior to the NEX format, Opera browsers that are older than version 15 used OEX files. Beginning with Version 15, Opera introduced the NEX format modeling it on the CRX file format. CRX files serve the same purpose but for the Google Chrome browser. Because of this similarity, Opera can also use CRX files for installing add-ons provided the APIs in the add-on installer are compatible with Opera.
How do you open NEX files?
You need a suitable software like Opera to open a NEX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NEX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NEX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

NEX file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the NEX files is as follows:
The NEX file type is a very commonly used file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 65% of all NEX files are NEXUS format files. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. A typical file size is 29 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as #NEXUS, DIMENSIONS NTAX, BEGIN TAXA;, TAXLABELS and data. The following filename is common: output.nex. Files like these are sometimes connected to matrix, tree, primate, primates, mtdna, trees, supplementary and alignment.
- 15% of all NEX files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "Cr24" at the beginning. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are often between 3 KB and 180 KB in size. An example of a file name is IDMOpExt.nex or frigate_ua.nex. These files can be linked to idmop, frigate, opera, mesenvies, chrome and mask.
All the rest of the NEX files (20%) have different formats, frequently e.g. ZX Spectrum Next binary format and nexus. Files like these are sometimes linked to data, phylogeny, edited, supplemental, chaeto, shark or syen. If you want to find out which format your NEX file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .nex file to analyze".
