All about NKI Files
The NKI file type is primarily associated with Native Instruments Kontakt.
What is an NKI file?
Some NKI files are formatted as a Nord Keyboard Instrument for products like the Nord Stage 3. For more on this variant, visit the Nord Stage 3 legacy page.
Key points about NKI files include:
How to open an NKI file
You need a suitable software like Native Instruments Kontakt to open an NKI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NKI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NKI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

NKI file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the NKI files is as follows:
The NKI file extension is not widely used. Such a file is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 55% of all NKI files have the same signature 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 00. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are often between 6 KB and 610 KB in size. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. DSIN, DSINj, DSINv and hsin. These files are often associated with piano, bass, free, cinematic, cajon, projectsam, luminous, choir and sonic.
- 20% of all NKI files start with the magic bytes /\ NI FC MTD /\, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. NKI files can be up to 450 MB in size, but are often around 510 KB - 53 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. /\ NI FC MTD /\. Files like these are about evoxa, and often contain personal information.
All other NKI files (25%) have no uniform format. These files are often connected to grand, guitar, acoustic, indian, loops, organ, snare or jazz. If you want to find out what your NKI file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with NKI files
- Associate the NKI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open instrument preset files. Because only the current version supports the latest NKI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Native Instruments Kontakt update.
- To make sure that your NKI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .NKI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
