Opening an NVM File
The NVM file type is primarily associated with PCSX2.
What is an NVM file?
File structure: NVM files contain input image paths and multiple 3D models. The following is a line-by-line description of the file:
- first comes the file version header (describes the version and, optionally, the calibration parameter),
- then comes the model section that spans a few lines (lists the models side by side; each model is defined by the number of cameras followed by a list of cameras and the number of 3D points followed by a list of 3D points,
- then there's an empty model containing the unregistered images, and finally a "0 camera" to indicate the end of the model section),
- then comes a comment section (contains comments describing the PLY section),
- finally, it ends with the number of PLY files and the list of indices of models that have associated PLY.
Compatibility: NVM files were meant to be created and opened by the original software.
How do you open NVM files?
You need a suitable software like PCSX2 to open an NVM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NVM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NVM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert NVM files:
- PCSX2 by PCSX2
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. NVM files are often referred to as PCSX2 data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- AOLpress (server map file) by AOLAOLpress is an HTML editor that was available from America Online. The original author was the NaviSoft, and the editor was named NaviPress, before being acquired by America Online. AOLpress creates a server map NVM file for use on the America Online server. NVM file extension format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the NVM files produces the following result:
NVM is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 30% of all NVM files start with the magic bytes NVM_V3, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The average file size is 3 MB with most files being between 6 KB and 18 MB in size. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as NVM_V3. A common filename is reconstruction.nvm.
- 15% of all NVM files use the same file format, which have the signature 01 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 60. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 400 KB with most files being between 340 KB and 400 KB in size. MAC-7420-v1.2020-06-01-CS.nvm or mac-release-X.nvm is a typical file name. Such NVM files store data about release.
All other NVM files (55%) have no consistent format, the following 4 formats can be found: OCTOPUS and MSG. Tagged as scph or bios. If you want to find out which format your NVM file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .nvm file to analyze".

How to solve problems with NVM files
- Associate the NVM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest NVM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the PCSX2 manufacturer website after an available PCSX2 update.
- To make sure that your NVM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .NVM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
