What is an NWD file

NWD files mostly belong to NavisWorks by Autodesk. An NWD file is a 3D construction design review document created with NavisWorks design review software package. The high compression, single file solution, and DRM protection provided by NWD format make it the ideal choice for publishing reviews that are viewable in any NavisWorks component application. Source data (drawings and models) for creating NavisWorks NWD files are usually created with other Autodesk CAD products. All versions of NavisWorks support NWD format. However, like all NavisWorks native formats, NWD does not enjoy full backward compatibility.

How to open NWD files

You need a suitable software like NavisWorks from Autodesk to open an NWD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NWD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NWD file directly in the browser:. NWD file format details:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the NWD files comes to the following conclusion:

NWD is a very widely used file extension. The file type predominantly uses a uniform format. The following file formats are most commonly found in NWD files:

• 99% of all NWD files are associated with NavisWorks Document. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 23 MB in size and range from 1 MB to 200 MB. It is a modern file type. The files contain the following words: #LcUStream-V1.1 binary double release C lichunk-008. Such NWD files store data about model, layout, review, master, plant, navis, overall, federated and piping.
• 1% of all NWD files are based on the zip format, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one NWD file. 3 to 15 compressed files with names like dictionary.txt, metadata.json, \chapters\1.txt and \chapters\1.txt.md are common. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The files are on average 9 KB in size and range from 830 bytes to 360 KB. The keywords chapters are typical for these files. Such NWD files store data about tyrants and house.
