What is an OFM file?

OFM files mostly belong to OmniForm by Nuance. The OFM (OmniForm) file format is used by several programs, though differently.
The OFM extension is a format that is used to save OmniForm forms. These forms are documents that can be used flexibly across other formats. OFM is a proprietary file format, developed by Scansoft before the company merged with Nuance Communications. OmniForm OFM forms contain attachments, field validation rules, calculations, auto-filling features, and digital signatures. OmniForm

Main use: OmniForm OFM files can only be created and opened with OmniPage, a proprietary software available for Windows by Nuance. OmniForm, the only other program that can be used, was discontinued by Nuance in 2005 and is no longer supported.

Other uses: The proprietary Melco's Embroidery File format uses the OFM extension. Originally designed for the Melco brand of embroidery machines, these files are used to store sewing machine instructions for the production of fabric designs. The embroidery file contains data such as needle movement, speed, positioning, and may also contain color information. OFM embroidery files can be opened with DesignShop by Melco, Font by Adobe or OfficeForms by TopLevel.

Flexibility: OFM provides easy and automatic document conversion to multiple formats such as PDF, Word, XML, RTF etc. However, converting software is needed to convert other document formats into OFM. The OCR scanning capabilities of OFM applications can convert documents into OFM, but some editing may be required.

How to open an OFM file

You need a suitable software like OmniForm to open an OFM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your OFM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a OFM file directly in the browser:. The OFM file type is a very commonly used file extension and is primarily used by a single program. The file formats most commonly found in OFM files are:

97% of all OFM files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. The app name of an OFM file is OmniForm or OmniForm Premium. The CLSID (class identifier of a Windows component object) is 48d026f3-c031-11d1-8fab-00a0c96e3856 or 4f4d4e49-464f-524d-afdc-0020af286206. The file contains sections Design Icon, Design Status, EdsIV Object, BlobPool, DatabaseV, FormV, LocaleID, RoutingSlip, SummaryInformation, Password, SharingInformation, SubmitInformation and SerialNumbers. The files are on average 130 KB in size and range from 39 KB to 500 KB. The file type is very old but is also used today. Such files are related to accession, form, logo, report, back, sheet, removed, patch and flag, and usually contain person-related data.
