What is an ORA file?

ORA files mostly belong to Instant Client by Oracle. ORA is the filename extension of layered raster images stored in OpenRaster file format (similar to PSD). This ORA file is actually a ZIP container comprising multiple layers of images, coordinates of the various layers, effects, color information, paths, documents, Unicode text, and metadata. The file is compressed using deflated or stored ZIP compression algorithm. Files required in the ORA multi-layer image container include the mimetype, stack.xml, data directory containing images, Thumbnails directory containing PNG thumbnails, and the mergedimage.png file. ORA image file format is used as a raster graphics editing and interchange format between image processing software such as GIMP, Krita, MyPaint, XnView, and Paint.NET. ORA is also the filename extension of database configuration parameters files used by Oracle Database, a cloud-based database management system. This ORA file contains optional, user-defined parameters used to fine-tune the performance of the database.

How do you open ORA files?

You need a suitable software like Instant Client to open an ORA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ORA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ORA file directly in the browser:. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. The ORA file extension is used very often and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:

25% of all ORA files are based on the zip format, the ORA file contains a number of compressed files. Primarily 8 to 50 files are included. File names are e.g. mergedimage.png, mimetype, stack.xml, \Thumbnails\thumbnail.png and \data\layer1.png. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. A typical file size is 2 MB. The keywords data, mimetypeimage/openrasterPK, IHDR, layer, gAMA and IDATx are typical for these files. 20180601.ora is a typical file name. Such files sometimes refer to doodle and sessions.
20% of all ORA files use the popular config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are on average 630 bytes in size and range from 350 bytes to 2 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: ora Network Configuration File, # Generated by Oracle configuration tools, Configuration File, admin, network, LISTENER, tnsnames.ora Network, product, ADDRESS, DESCRIPTION and dbhome. Examples of file names are tnsnames.ora or listener.ora.
