All about OTI Files
The OTI file type is primarily associated with ETAP.
What is an OTI file?
For example, one common type is the ETAP electrical project file. These files use the Microsoft Compound format to store complex electrical design data. They are created and opened with ETAP software, and you can learn more on the ETAP website.
Another use for an OTI file is to hold train data. These files are encoded in UTF-16 (LE) and may contain information such as axle counter details. They are used by systems like Train Axle Counter and the On-Train Data Interchange file from the MITRAC Train Data Server. A text editor that supports UTF-16 or specialized railway software is needed to view these files.
A further instance is where an OTI file contains obfuscated PHP code. In this case, the file is linked to the PHP programming environment and might be associated with malware. Such files should be handled with secure code editors and proper security tools. More information on PHP is available at the PHP website.
- ETAP Electrical Project File: Open with ETAP software to manage electrical engineering projects.
- Train Data File: Use a text editor with UTF-16 support or railway data analysis tools.
- PHP Code File: Open with a PHP-aware text editor, and exercise caution if malware is suspected.
FilExt.com note: Verify the file source before opening and scan it with antivirus software if you are unsure about its content.
How do you open OTI files?
You need a suitable software like ETAP to open an OTI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your OTI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a OTI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert OTI files:
- ETAP
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. OTI files are often referred to as ETAP data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- OpenOffice/StarOffice (OpenDocument (Ver 2) Image Template) by Sun Microsystems, Inc.This file format is part of the Open Document Format for Office Applications (OpenDocument) 1.0 specification. This OASIS format is expected to become an industry standard for sharing documents. It is being adopted by the OpenOffice/StarOffice version 2 software suite but may appear in other products as well. The Mime types used with this association are: application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.image-template, application/x-vnd.oasis.opendocument.image-template. This file format is classified as XML. OTI file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the OTI files is as follows:
OTI is rarely used as a file extension and mainly uses a special format. The file formats most commonly found in OTI files are:
- 75% of all OTI files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known by the name OLE2 Compound Document Format or Composite Document File Format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. The file contains several sections which are named like Administrators, ODBCInfo, Permissions, Users, Version and MultiUser. The files are 10 KB to 32 KB in size, with a median of 16 KB. The file type is relatively new. Files like these are sometimes connected to circuit and short.
- 25% of all OTI files are based on the well-known UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. A typical file size is 45 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. lTrain. Such files sometimes refer to uploadeventdata, ccudas and uploadconddata.

Technical Data for OTI File Extension
an oti project file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with OTI files
- Associate the OTI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open project files. Because only the current version supports the latest OTI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available ETAP update.
- To make sure that your OTI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .OTI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
