All about P7 Files

The P7 file type is primarily associated with OpenSSL.

P7File Extension P7
File extension: P7
File type:  public key certificate

What is a P7 file?

P7 files mostly belong to OpenSSL by OpenSSL Developers. A P7 file contains an X.509 public key certificate saved in the PKCS #7 cryptography message syntax of the Public-Key Cryptography Standards (PKCS). The file's contents are saved in raw DER (Distinguished Encoding Rules) or Privacy-enhanced Electronic Mail Base64 format. The pkcs7 command in OpenSSL cryptography software kit can create, parse, and verify a P7 file. Web browsers and email client/server applications also use a P7 public key certificates to authenticate data sources. In some cases, a PKCS #7 public key certificate is saved as a P7B file. XV image editor saves a thumbnail in a P7 file.

How to open P7 files

You need a suitable software like OpenSSL to open a P7 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your P7 file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a P7 file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

  4. Then click the file format (e.g. PDF, JPG, DOCX, TXT, ...) you want.
  5. Download the converted file.

Programs that open and convert P7 files:

  1. OpenSSL by OpenSSL Developers
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. P7 files are often referred to as OpenSSL web (source)s because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Certificate Manager (public key certificate) by Microsoft
Certificate manager is a digital certificate, certificate trust list, and certificate revocation list management software. It supports P7 public key certificates. This file format is classified as Web (source). Related links: pkcs7, PKCS 7, PKCS7: Cryptographic Message Syntax Standard
  3. XV (bitmap) by John Bradley
XV is an obsolete interactive image manipulation application for the X Window System. It uses a P7 file to save the thumbnail of an image in XV Visual Schnauzer format. This file format is classified as Raster Image. Related links: xv (software), XnView

a p7 public key certificate is a special file format by OpenSSL Developers and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with P7 files

  • Associate the P7 file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open public key certificates. Because only the current version supports the latest P7 file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the OpenSSL Developers manufacturer website after an available OpenSSL update.
  • To make sure that your P7 file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .P7 file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
