What is a PAG file?

PAG files mostly belong to Adobe After Effects. A PAG file is not a single standard file type.
Some PAG files hold Adobe After Effects animation data that work with specialized programs like IVORY Animator. They store keyframe information and motion data in a proprietary format.
Other PAG files are used to hold encrypted data such as a preview thumbnail cache managed by tools like Microsoft Office ClickToRun. In these cases the file content is secured and may be tied to encryption tools (see AxCrypt for encryption details).
There are PAG files that use a ZIP format. They act as a container for a zipped document along with JPG previews. Many times these files belong to project packages or workspaces like those seen in iWork Pages.
Some files are designed to hold system log or embedded controller data – for example, containing health network or NI PXI log details as used in technical systems, with further discussion on NI’s website.
Other variants include application data using the Microsoft Compound format for ProTool or Automation Studio pages, and even drawing files used by design software like SoftPlan (SoftPlan webpage).

How to open PAG files

You need a suitable software like Adobe After Effects to open a PAG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To view or edit PAG files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files.
