What is a PAL file?

PAL files mostly belong to Paint by Microsoft. PAL files contain the color palette of raster images used by various programs. A palette usually comprises a color lookup table used to reference a range of color in a given color space of an image. Rather than describing every color in a color space, each color is assigned an index (reference), thereby reducing the amount of data required to reproduce that color space when the image is rendered. These palettes are typically stored as text files or RIFF containers. Some image processing programs that store color palettes in PAL files include PaintShop, Paint, and Painter. PhotoAnim, a photo animation software for Windows, stores 3D objects (e.g. people) in library files that have PAL filename extension. PAL files are also used to store ROM dumps of Nintendo 64 games released for Europe and Australia. Rise of Nations, a real-time strategy video game saves campaign media data in PAL files.

PAL file format details:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the PAL files produces the following result:

The PAL extension is quite commonly used. The file itself covers different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in PAL files are:

All other PAL files (65%) have no consistent format, the following 5 formats can be found: Dr. Halo Palette and RGB.
