What is a PAM file?

PAM files mostly belong to Netpbm. PAM files are data files with a portable structure. They are used in several ways.
  • Netpbm PAM Image: This version stores raster image data. It can include multiple channels (red, green, blue, and alpha) and is an extension of older Netpbm formats. For more details, visit Netpbm Documentation.
  • Video Data Storage: In some cases, the PAM format is applied as a video file format to hold a series of image frames. More information is available on the Netpbm homepage.
  • Game Image File: Certain applications, such as in the Plants vs. Zombies game, use PAM files to store image data.
  • PowerDesigner Model File: A different use case is for PowerDesigner models. These files contain system or database models and need PowerDesigner to be opened. Visit SAP for details.
  • FilExt.com tip: How to open and view these files: For image and video data, try image viewers and converters like GIMP, IrfanView, or Netpbm utilities. For model files, use PowerDesigner.

    How to open PAM files

You need a suitable software like Netpbm to open a PAM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PAM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PAM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

    PAM file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the PAM files:

The PAM file ending includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

    • Associate the PAM file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open raster image formats. Because only the current version supports the latest PAM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Netpbm update.
