What is a PBL file?

PBL files mostly belong to PowerBuilder. Most PBL files are PowerBuilder library files used to store compiled objects in the PowerBuilder development system. They bundle forms, windows, menus, and other resources into a single binary file that the PowerBuilder IDE uses during both design and runtime.

Primary Use: These files act as libraries for storing precompiled application components in PowerBuilder projects.

Alternate Uses: A few PBL files adopt an RTF format (viewable in Microsoft Word), serve as playback lists in multimedia applications, or work as payment batch lists in SWIFT systems.

How to open PBL files

You need a suitable software like PowerBuilder to open a PBL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The PBL file type is a very commonly used file extension and is primarily used by a single program. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 85% of all PBL files are associated with PowerBuilder Library. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 66 KB to 4 MB in size, with a median of 790 KB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. The following keywords are characteristic: HDR*P and PowerBuilder. Files like these are sometimes connected to report, reports, formats, admin, accounting, custom, tessitura, lapsepro, namenski, transfer, adform, hakjek, prrost, sample and func.
• 2% of all PBL files use the popular RTF file format. RTF is short for Rich Text Format, a proprietary document file format for cross-platform document interchange with Microsoft products. It may contain formatted text and graphics. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The average file size is 290 KB with most files being between 28 KB and 1 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. adeflang1025, ansi, ansicpg1252, deff0, fonttbl, rtf1, stshfdbch, themelangcs0, themelangfe0, adeff0, deflang1033, deflangfe1033, stshfbi0, stshfhich31506 and stshfloch31506.
