A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. The PDT extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in PDT files:

• 25% of all PDT files have the same signature 00 00 00 00 00 1A B1 26 02. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are often between 95 bytes and 190 bytes in size. All other PDT files (60%) have no uniform format, often e.g. ProCite data, DOC, UTF-8, PDF, JTV, Goroskop, PDT, VersaProbe and Fatek.
