Opening a PFD File
The PFD file type is primarily associated with Process.
What is a PFD file?
PFD files mostly belong to Process by iGrafx. PFD filename extension is associated with documents containing process flow diagrams, flowcharts, and business process model diagrams created with Micrografx Optima! (now Process) drawing software. These PFD diagrams are stored in a vector graphics format that can be viewed with Process business process modeling software. Databases used by Alzex Finance (formerly Personal Finances) personal finance management software are stored as PFD files. Database entries made with ProForm title closing and escrow software are saved in a different type of PFD files. Saved game control data used by PlayStation 3 video game console are saved in files with PFD filename extension. Projects exported from or imported into PowerFactory power systems analysis software, are also saved in PFD files.
How do you open PFD files?
You need a suitable software like Process to open a PFD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PFD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PFD file directly in the browser:. To view or edit PFD files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the PFD files produces the following result:
An PFD file is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 20% of all PFD files belong to Playstation 3 savegame control data. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 32 KB in size and range from 32 KB to 32 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords PFDB are typical for these files. A common filename is PARAM.PFD.
- 10% of all PFD files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "03 01 00 00 00 00 00 00" at the beginning. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 110 KB and 140 KB in size. Examples of file names are Profile1.pfd. Such files sometimes refer to warriorprofile.

How to solve problems with PFD files
- Associate the PFD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open diagrams. Because only the current version supports the latest PFD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the iGrafx manufacturer website after an available Process update.
- To make sure that your PFD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
