What is a PLY file?

PLY files mostly belong to VTK. A PLY file is a Polygon File Format file used to store 3D model data. It holds geometric information such as vertices and faces that build a polygon mesh. The file can be encoded in plain text (ASCII) or binary, and it may include details like color, normal vectors, and texture coordinates.

How to open PLY files

You need a suitable software like VTK to open a PLY file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PLY file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PLY file directly in the browser:. PLY file extension format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the PLY files:

The PLY file extension is very common and predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 90% of all PLY files are associated with Polygon File Format. The files are often between 38 KB and 77 MB in size. The file type is very old but is also used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as element vertex, property float x, property float y, property float z, format binary_little_endian 1.0, comment, property uchar red, property uchar green and format ascii 1.0. Such files sometimes refer to cloud, point, mesh, scan, pointcloud, model, points and reconstructed.
• 2% of all PLY files have the same signature EPLYBNDS. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. PLY files are between 4 KB and 290 KB in size. The keywords EPLYBNDS, mtlVERT and MESH are typical for these files. The following filename is common: body.ply or skin.ply. These files are attributed to turret.

All other PLY files (8%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. SIZE and polygons. These files are often connected to room, depth, color, dense, merged or sample.
