What is an R2W file?

R2W files mostly belong to Reflection for UNIX. An R2W file is used mainly as a Reflection Workspace File. It stores workspace configurations and connection settings within a Microsoft Compound file format.
These files are used in two distinct ways:

Reflection Workspace: They hold environment details such as session information, display settings, and connection parameters for applications like Reflection for UNIX or Reflection X. The compound format allows the file to contain multiple data streams in one package.

CAD Piping Design: In some cases, an R2W file carries data for piping designs. It is used in projects by CADISON and can also serve as a Revit Worksharing Central Model, supporting collaborative design work.

How can I open an R2W file?

You need a suitable software like Reflection for UNIX to open an R2W file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. R2W file format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. R2W is rarely used as a file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 95% of all R2W files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This Windows file format has features similar to those of a filesystem format with virtual files and subfolders. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. Most of these files are 30 KB to 160 KB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Files like these have the following tags: console.
• 5% of all R2W files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 00 FF FE FF. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 97 KB and 210 KB in size.
